The Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has filed a lawsuit seeking clarification as to whether or not he could remain in office while running for president.
The suit, according to constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, who is Emefiele’s lawyer, was filed on Monday at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court.
Ozekhome, in a statement forwarded to The Boss Newspaper, with supporting documents, confirmed the development.
“I have just completed filing the suit on behalf of my client,” he said.
Emefiele, last Friday procured the N100 million presidential expression of interest and nomination forms of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He however, denied knowledge of the purchase, claiming it was bought for him by groups including the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria.
The move however, unleashed knocks from various sectors, condemning the apex bank boss for running foul of the CBN Act of 2007 and the Civil Service Rules, which prohibit the governor from taking up any other assignment or vocational work, or presenting himself for elective office.
Calls have come from various corners asking Emefiele to resign his plumb CBN job, and seek his political ambition, and failure to do that, should be sacked.
The involvement of notable lawyer, Ozekhome, has given the whole saga, a new twist.
