The President of the United States of America, Mr. Donald Trump, has described Nigeria as a country with a reputation for massive corruption, adding however, that President Muhammadu Buhari is doing his best to tackle the scourge.
The American President made the remarks while fielding questions from White House correspondents on issues bothering on his assistance to Nigeria in relation to procurement of military hardware and the economy.
Buhari had visited Washington DC on the invitation of President Trump, hopefully to ask for more assistance to tackle the Boko Haram insurgence and other security challenges.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian President had patronised the American government in buying military fighter jets to the tune of $496 million, a move experts say merited the invitation.
Buhari has therefore, made history as the first black African head of government, basically the first sub-saharan African leader, to visit Donald Trump since he assumed office in January 2017. The first African head of government to visit Trump in the White House is Egyptian President, Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi. He made his visit on April 2, 2017, few months after the American President assumed office.
This negates earlier statement from Presidential spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu that President Buhari is the first African head of government to visit Trump in the White House.
