BBNaija: Who Made the rules? Angel’s Father Counters Maria’s ‘Boys Will Be Boys’ Comment

Father to Big Brother Naija season six housemate, Angel, has fired back at Maria’s “boys will be boys” comment which she made during a Diary Session on Wednesday.

Speaking on Angel’s relationship with the male contestants in the house, Big Brother asked Maria on her opinion as regards the men not respecting their relationship with their partners and rejecting Angel’s advances.

Maria responded saying, “I totally agree with what you’re saying but I think at the end of the day men, or rather should I say boys will be boys. If anything easy comes their way, they run with it.”

Cutting her short and concluding the session, Big Brother said, “If as you say, ‘boys will be boys’, then maybe Angel will be Angel.”

Reacting to the Diary Session, Angel’s father who also handles her Instagram account, @theangeljbsmith, made a post hours later to address the comments made by Maria.

“We live in a patriarchal society where men are not held accountable for their actions in the name of ‘men will be men’. Who made the rules?” He questioned.

He further stated that society should allow women to be “liberal with their bodies without making them feel easy or cheap.”

“A woman isn’t easily accessible because she chooses to be liberal with her body. It is important we hold men accountable for their actions the way we hold women also, isn’t that what equality stands for? To excuse grave mistakes with the phrase ‘boys will be boys’ has to stop,” he continued.

He also pointed out that in the fight for equality, “when a fellow woman keeps making excuses for the men it takes us a 100 steps back.”

“That being said, Angel will be Angel in Big Brother’s voice,” he concluded.

Angel’s father has been one of her fiercest supporter since she got into the show. Earlier in the competition when she faced backlash for wearing a mini see-through dress during a fashion challenge, her father hailed her for being body positive.

Class, intelligence and brains were all at display when the much anticipated Chess Showdown, tagged Battle of the Ages hit town in the luxurious Centerpoint Tower, Alfred Rewane Road, Ikoyi, Lagos

Powered by Daniel Ford International, the game of mind, wits and alertness was between Guinness World Record holder, Tunde Onakoya, who is also the Founder, Chess in Slums of Africa, and the 12-year-old child chess prodigy, Deborah Quickpen. The game ended in a draw.

Analysts have scored Tunde Onakoya high for showing his prowess early in the game winning the Rapid games 3:1.

But as her name is, Quickpen made a quick recovery, turning the tables in the blitz games. Her recovery gave her a 3:1 victory

Tunde had started well in the blitz game, winning the first, and keeping Deborah in a tight corner. However, fate was on Quickpen’s side as she took the second, third and fourth games with ease.

The last two games of the blitz sessions were indeed a walk over for Quickpen. She won convincingly on both the board and on the clock.

While Onakoya won the first set by 3:1, Quickpen won the second by the same 3:1. The total at the end of proceedings was 4:4. No winner, no vanquished!

A deep hug, immediately after the game by  Tunde to Deborah was all it took to prove the game was not just a tough one, but also well enjoyed.

Congratulations to the duo of Onakoya and Quickpen for their great contributions to the game of Chess in Nigeria.
