Sunil Taldar Named Airtel Africa CEO to Retire As Ogunsanya Retires

Airtel Africa Plc has named Sunil Taldar as the next Managing Director/CEO, disclosing the retirement of incumbent Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun “Segun” Ogunsanya, who is due to retire effective July 1, 2024.

Ogunsanya, who joined Airtel in 2012 and led the Nigeria Operations for nine years before becoming Group CEO in 2021, played a pivotal role in maintaining double-digit revenue growth and introducing innovative products across the African continent.

Building on his achievements as CEO, including the launch of the company’s first Sustainability Strategy, Ogunsanya will assume the role of the inaugural Chair of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation. The foundation, a separate legal entity independent of the Airtel Africa Group, will focus on digital inclusion, financial inclusion, access to education, and environmental protection.

 

Upon his retirement, Ogunsanya will provide advisory support to the Chairman, the Airtel Africa Board, and the CEO for a 12-month period. Simultaneously, Airtel Africa announced the appointment of Sunil Taldar as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer to succeed Ogunsanya. Taldar, who joined Airtel Africa in October 2023 as Director – Transformation, will begin the transition to the CEO role alongside Ogunsanya. Following a transition period, Taldar will be appointed to the Board as an Executive Director and assume the role of CEO on July 1, 2024. At that time, Ogunsanya will step down from the Board and retire from the Company.

His industry experience, strategic vision, constant customer focus and proven record of delivery will enable him to deliver our strategic objectives and to lead the Group in the next stages of its development.
In respect of the transition period, Segun continues to lead the business very effectively as seen in our financial results. Given that Sunil Taldar has already joined the Group, we are confident that we will have an orderly leadership transition and handover of responsibilities.

The Governor of Osun State, Asiwaju Ademola Adeleke, has underscored the administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and future of the young generation. He made the assertion today at this years Children’s Day Celebration in Osogbo.

Adeleke, who was represented by the Secretary to the Osun State Government, Hon. Teslim Igbalaye, highlighted the paramount importance of securing today for the future, the Governor emphasized the crucial role of every leader in ensuring the orderly growth and development of children. He stressed the significance of strong institutional development and infrastructure building as fundamental pillars for securing the future of the younger generation.

The Governor outlined the administration’s comprehensive approach to social and physical infrastructure development, including initiatives to enhance educational and healthcare facilities, maternal care, and support for workers and families. Moreover, he underscored the importance of addressing pressing issues such as juvenile care, disability attention, and gender-based violence with proactive measures.

Emphasizing the administration’s proactive stance, Adeleke highlighted ongoing efforts to revitalize the social sector and undertake extensive infrastructure projects, including road construction, bridge building, school and healthcare center reconstruction, and sports facility upgrades. Furthermore, he mentioned plans for the development of the state’s airport and the keen interest of investors in various sectors of the state’s economy.

He reaffirmed the administration’s steadfast commitment to the well-being and prosperity of the children, pledging to implement policies and programs aimed at enhancing their quality of life. He extended warm wishes to all children on this auspicious occasion, reiterating the government’s dedication to being pro-people and pro-children.

His statement reads;

“It is my pleasure to address the 2024 Children Day Celebration. As an administration that places high premium on the young ones, I am elated to address both children and parents within and outside our dear state.”
“Every leader has a sacred duty to secure today for the future of the young ones. In reality, building today is a critical condition for safe and secured lives for the future generations. Every responsible administration must therefore ensure a strong Institutional development of the society to assure orderly growth of our dear children.”

“The key to seamless transition from children to youth and from youth to adulthood is the building of the social and physical infrastructure of the society. By developing the social sector , we are rebuilding the schools , the health centres , the maternal care agenda and caring for workers to strengthen their capacity to take care of their families.”

“By building the social sector , we are introducing multiple programmes bordering on juvenile care, disability attention and reform of basic education. Proper attention to the social sector also entails focusing on the issue of gender violence with immediate action to stop the menace.”

“In the area of the social sector , our government is acting proactively to build today for the orderly growth of our young ones. Our programmes are holistic and targeted even though we are just one and half years in office.”

“Aside from paying attention to the social sector, we are equally tackling the area of physical, hard infrastructure. We have a huge infra agenda that has turned Osun into a huge construction site. We are rebuilding our roads, constructing bridges, dualising several roads, reconstructing entire schools and health centers, upgrading our water works and working to transform our sporting stadium to a world standard. Our airport is in the making while investors are eyeing several sectors of our state economy.”

“Our administration is fixated on fixing Osun to deepen the prosperous growth of our young ones. As our children are of diverse capacities, it is my pledge to forge ahead with policies and programmes that will make life easy and enjoyable to our children.”

“On this blessed occasion, I assure parents and children that our administration will leave no stone unturned to protect and develop our children.We are a government that is pro-people and pro-children.”

Emir Tussle: Kano Deputy Governor Apologises to Ribadu

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, has apologised to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for implicating him in the ongoing emirship dispute in the state.

Gwarzo had alleged that Ribadu played a role in the return of the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, to the state by providing him with private jets.

However, Ribadu denied the accusations and threatened legal action.

At a press conference at the Government House, Kano, on Monday, Gwarzo apologised to Ribadu, clarifying that the government was misinformed about his involvement in the ongoing crisis.

“The Office of the National Security Adviser has refuted the allegations and distanced themselves from what we have alleged.

“I have seen it, he has done it through three media, and today, I have seen the one about going to court.

“We have to acknowledge that we have been misled into believing that the NSA was behind the happenings along this line,” Gwarzo said.

He said they were shocked from the outset when Ribadu’s name was mentioned in the plot to impose the deposed emir.

“We apologise to the National Security Adviser, his person and office for any embarrassment and inconveniences this might have caused him

“We are human and can err at any time. On my behalf and the Governor of Kano State, I want to assure the NSA of our continued support and cooperation in discharging his duty as the NSA,” he stated.

I’ll Accept Whatever the Law Says, Nobody is above the Law, Dethroned Emir Bayero Says

Speaking at the mini-palace where he has been since his return to the state after his dethronement, he said justice would prevail.

The monarch vowed to accept whatever the law states, adding that Kano is an important state in Nigeria.

Speaking in Hausa, he said, “I call on the people to remain law-abiding while awaiting outcome of the legal process in this tussle.

“We call on  the authority to do justice in this matter. Kano is a very influential state in Nigeria. Whatever affects Kano affects Nigeria. May peace reign in Kano. We pray for Allah to bless Kano with responsible and just leaders. Justice is the way to go on every issue. There will be justice. Nobody is above law. We will accept whatever the law says. I appreciate all the people who have shown concern.

“As I said, justice will take its course. We will keep on praying for peace in Kano State. May Allah the Almighty protect us.”
