Troops of 93 Battalion under 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected female kidnapper while trying to pick ransom for an abducted victim in Taraba State.

The female suspect – Janet Igohia – was married to a notorious criminal who was a second-in-command to the late Gana Terwase, a one-time ring leader of a militia group in Benue State.

The acting Assistant Director of 6 Brigade, Lieutenant Oni Olubodunde, disclosed this through a statement

The 31-year-old Igohia, Olubodunde said, was nabbed after picking up the sum of N1.5 million, being ransom payment for an abducted victim at the Chanchangi area in Takum Local Government Area.

“Based on this information, troops deployed at Chanchanji laid a siege at the suspected area, and at about 10:00am, Janet  Igohia age 31 was arrested after picking up the sum of one million, five hundred thousand naira ransom, being payment for an abducted victim,” the statement read.

“Janet Igohia revealed that she is presently married to Voryor Gata a notorious criminal and former second in command to late Gana Terwase. She is currently married to the leader of a violent extremist group in southern Taraba.

“According to her, she was previously married to high profile criminals such as the late Terkibi Gemaga AKA Mopol a notorious kidnapper who was killed by troops 5 years ago. She revealed that she also got married to the late Gana Terwase another notorious criminal who was killed during Joint Special Force Operation 3 years ago.”

Olubodunde also revealed that the troops deployed in the Mararaba Baissa community of Donga LGA apprehended two other suspected gunrunners who were allegedly involved in extra-judicial killings and cattle rustling with the sum of N600,000.

Also arrested was a notorious gunrunner dealing in arms and ammunition and supplying them to criminals within Taraba State and other parts of the country.

He said the troops working on credible intelligence on the activities of the arms dealer arrested the suspect, Joshua Dutse Idah, in the Ibi Local Government Area of the State.

At his arrest, Joshua was driving to Kaduna State in a blue Volkswagen Sharon vehicle with registration number Rivers SKN-390AA while troops had trailed the suspect.

Olubodunde noted that the suspects and the exhibits recovered will be handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution in line with extant laws guiding their operations.

He also urged residents of Taraba to continue to support the military and other security agencies by giving credible and timely information on suspicious movements or activities of criminals within the State.

Rivers Assembly Non-Existent, Fubara Insists Amid APC’s Call for Impeachment

Published

By

The Rivers State Government on Tuesday dismissed a call on the state House of Assembly by the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress in the state to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor  Siminlayi Fubara.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, told The PUNCH during an interview in Port Harcourt, that the governor would not allow anybody to throw the state into anarchy.

Fubara, on Monday, dismissed the Assembly as an illegal body that did not exist while receiving delegation from Bayelsa State on a peace mission, led by the immediate past governor, Senator Seriake Dickson. This was just after the Assembly passed a bill into without his assent.

Also, the governor insisted that the eight-point peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu was a mere political solution to a problem and not a constitutional issue.

The APC Caretaker Committee Chairman in the state, Chief Tony Okocha, in his reaction on Tuesday, called on the 27 members of the state House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to immediately commence an impeachment process against Fubara.

Okocha said the governor did not have the powers to declare the lawmakers as illegal.

He also wondered when the governor realised that the peace deal which he signed before Tinubu in Abuja was unconstitutional.

He added that aside from refusing to implement all the agreements, he had been making scathing remarks on the President’s genuine intervention to resolve the crisis that rocked the state.

But in a swift reaction, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, said the position of the governor had not changed.

He stated, “By jurisprudence, the 27 lawmakers lost their seats on the day they defected to another party. That is what the law says.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Section 109, 1g clearly states it. It is incontrovertible. So for anybody to think that they can start a process, the law says they cannot put something on nothing.

“There is nothing at all to even put on something. The House of Assembly does not exist. They are non-existent. The governor said yesterday that they did not exist. Out of his magnanimity, he allowed them, giving them a floater to see if they could come to reality. “But it does appear that they don’t understand what was done for them. So if they want to start an impeachment process, they do not have the legal teeth to even do it. They can only bark, but they can’t bite.”

Also, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Chief Edwin Clark and other prominent individuals in the region warned the lawmakers against causing anarchy in the state.

Trouble in NSCDC As Six Senior Officers Land in EFCC Net over N6bn Fraud

Published

By

All is not very well with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as six of its very senior officers have reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The senior officers, according to The Punch report, were grilled by EFCC interrogators at the commission’s headquarters, Jabi, Abuja.

The paper gathered that the NSCDC officers were handed over to the EFCC on Monday on the order of the NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi.

The papaer further informed that impeccable sources privy to the development but who were not authorised to speak to the press revealed that the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, had earlier written a letter to the NSCDC CG, demanding the officers’ release for interrogation.

It wrote:

A source revealed, “Six senior NSCDC officers are currently in our custody. They’re being grilled by our investigators over alleged fraudulent activities running into over N6bn.”

Confirming the development, another source said, “The EFCC did not arrest the NSCDC CG, neither is he being probed. We only have six senior NSCDC officers in our custody, and they’re being probed over alleged N6bn fraud.

“The EFCC Chairman had earlier written to the NSCSC CG to provide the officers, and the CG did. Now they’re in our custody and are being grilled by EFCC interrogators.”

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, could not be reached for comments on Monday as phone calls and text messages to his phone lines were not responded to nor returned.

Meanwhile, when contacted for comments, the spokesperson for the NSCDC, Babawale Afolabi, said he was not aware of the development.

“I’m not aware of this,” Afolabi said in a terse WhatsApp message sent to our correspondent on Monday.

However, a whatsapp message sent to the National Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, by The Boss, on Tuesday, to confirm the arrest or otherwise, was not responded to.
