Court Orders NIMC, Others to Release Ukpo’s Biodata to Ekweremadu

Published

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, ordered the National Identity Management Commission and others to release the certified true copy of David Ukpo’s biodata to former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice.

Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the ruling following an originating summon marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/984/2022, moved by Ekweremadu’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.

The News Agency of Nigeria, on June 27, reported that Ekweremadu and wife had, in the application dated and filed on June 27 by Awomolo, sued NIMC and four others.

Others mentioned in the suit are the Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service; Stanbic-IBTC Bank; United Bank of Africa and Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc as 2nd to 5th respondents respectively.

NAN reports that the couple were, on June 23, remanded in the UK police custody, after they were arraigned before the Uxbridge Magistrate Court for alleged conspiracy to facilitate the travel of David Ukpo, alleged to be minor, for organ harvesting.

They, however, denied the allegations and the court adjourned till July 7 for hearing.

Ekweremadu also appeared before the Uxbridge Magistrate Court on Thursday where he was denied bail.

But in the originating summon, the duo prayed the court for an order directing all the defendants to supply them with the CTC of Ukpo’s biodata information in their care for the purpose of facilitating the criminal investigation and tendering same to establish their innocence with respect to Ukpo’s age in the criminal charges against them before the Uxbridge Magistrate Court.

When the matter was called, Awomolo informed the court that an application had been filed, seeking the order striking out the name of the 5th defendant (Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc) and Justice Ekwo granted the prayer.

The senior lawyer told the court that all the defendants had been served with the court processes.

Justice Ekwo then asked lawyer to the 4th defendant (United Bank of Africa), G. O. Maduka, if they were served and he responded in affirmative.

According to him, after going through their motion on notice,, we felt we have no reaction to it.

Moving his motion, Awomolo said the application dated and filed on June 27 was supported by an affidavit and a written address.

“I respectfully adopted all the processes my lord,” he said.

Awomolo, however, called the attention of the court to letters written by the defendants, indicating that until his client’s application is granted by the court, “they will not be able to respond to their request.”

In a short ruling, the judge held that having been satisfied that the defendants had been served and looking at the averments in the application, “I make an order granting the prayers.”

Akwa Ibom Gov Clarifies, Says I Didn’t Appoint My Daughter First Lady

Akwa Ibom State governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has refuted reports suggesting that he has appointed first daughter Mrs. Helen Obareki as the First Lady of the State following his wife death recently.

He clarified that his daughter was appointed as the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, a point he made clear President Bola Tinubu’s wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu during her condolence visit.

Speaking at the All Nations Christian Ministry International, Eket, on Sunday, the governor explained that his decision was a natural outcome, not one motivated by political considerations.

The governor maintained that first ladies are not appointed. However, following the passing of his wife, it was appropriate and comforting for his daughter—who had been her mother’s closest assistant—to oversee and implement the programs of the office.

He noted that priority attention would be given to his late wife’s pet project, Golden Initiative for All (GIFA), as well as other support programs for women, the elderly, the vulnerable, and the less privileged. He added that these activities could only be sustained with Mrs. Obareki as coordinator due to her experience, exposure, education, and access.

His said: “Appointing our daughter, who had worked closely with her late mother, as the coordinator is not an appointment as First Lady. You don’t appoint a First Lady. The Office of the First Lady has responsibilities to the women of this state, and my wife had programs she was running—the GIFA, the support for the elderly, and other programmes.

“As long as I remain governor, those programs will not die. There must be a coordinator, and it must be someone I see on a daily basis, someone who can walk into my room and brief me, not a distant person.”

Governor Eno further explained that, by the appointment, his daughter would be addressed as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor and Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, stating that this decision was one way to bring healing to the family and comfort to himself.

While expressing gratitude to the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and her entourage, the governor also thanked the church for their words of comfort and encouraged them to find solace in the word of God.
