The 23-time Grand Slam Champion was coasting to the Semi- Finals and leading 5-1 against Czech, Karolina Pliskova when she injured her ankle and from then on, her game dropped to an all time low and eventually losing 4-6, 6-4, 5-7.
A Serena victory would have set up a much anticipated match up with US Open 2017 champion, Naomi Osaka.
The crowd at the venue of the match, Rod Laver Arena was stunned as the Czech who confessed in the post-match interview that she was already mentally in the locker room at 1-5 waved excitedly after the shocking victory.
