Mother of All Rallies: Udom Emmanuel Shuts Down Akwa Ibom …Declares Second Term Bid

By Eric Elezuo

Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria came to a complete stand still on Friday as the state Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, officially declared his intention to contest the 2019 Governorship election under the platform of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a mother of all rallies.

Flanked by his wife, Martha, PDP stalwarts, past governors of Akwa Ibom State, some serving PDP governors among the stupendous crowd of followers that thronged the 30 thousand capacity Godswill Apkabio International Stadium, Governor Emmanuel made a 37 minutes speech declaring his bid for a second term in office and the reasons behind his intention., among which is the fact he has done well, and deserves the people’s vote for a second term.

The governor was very confident of retaining his seat after the February 2019 election despite the recent defection to the All Progressives Congress of his former ally, Senator Godswill Akpabio

Both politicians have parted ways in the wake of the defection and have not ceased to throw banters at each other at the slightest opportunity. Governor Udom is accusing Akpabio of betraying the people’s confidence because of his personal ambition.

Reeling out his achievements while seeking the people’s mandate to run for a second term, Governor Emmanuel itemized relative peace and security in the state as one of the achievements of his administration as well as the establishment of  “pencil and toothpick-manufacturing company, metering company, coconut refinery, and other industries”. These he said he brought to the state.

“My administration has done over 1,700 kilometres of roads in the state in less than three years, renovated over 349 schools, brought down the cost of garri, (a staple food in the state), at least by 50 per cent, and revived the healthcare system”.

He praised himself as having performed more than any other first-term governor in Nigeria given the resources available and harped the administration’s focus on preparing the future for the youth as well as preparing the youth for the future.

He promised to surpass his performance and every other expectation if voted back in office, saying that “The collective future of all of our youth, our women, and our elders is the centre of our policy.”

Speaking on the mammoth crowd that turned up, Emmanuel said it typifies unity among Akwa Ibom people, and shows without equivocation the party the state has identified with while reiterating that “Never in history has Akwa Ibom been this unified. Never in history has Akwa Ibom been this peaceful.”

He added: “I am overwhelmed. The number of people here (in the stadium) is enough for me not to say anything here today. You’ve written the story, you’ve shown it to the whole world that Akwa Ibom is PDP.”

any country that does not build its economy cannot build its politics. Politics, he said, must be anchored on the economy.

While throwing shells at his erstwhile political ally and predecessor, Akpabio, he claimed that some of the projects in the state like the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road and the five-star hotel at Ikot Ekpene were left undone and abandoned by before he came into office to restart them.

“Let nobody deceive you, it is this administration that has taken that road (Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road) up to 23 kilometres.”

He made further revelations:

“They talked about Four-Point by Sheraton. Today, I don’t want to answer them. But let me state, the facts must come out fast and the facts must point to the truth because the truth is constant.

“It is just now that we have incorporated a company to negotiate with Starwood for that name Four-Point by Sheraton. If anybody has ever done that, let him show me the agreement he signed.

“It is now that we are doing external works in that premises in order to turn it into a hotel. Is building a hotel? Can a building be a hotel?”

“I don’t want to join issues today, I just want to humbly submit myself. But the truth must be told that it is just now that I have paid $7.2 million to Starwood so that we can retain the name that was surreptitiously put on the building called Four-Point by Sheraton Hotel.

“Who is telling you a lie? Who is telling you a lie? Can they tell you that there were mechanical or electrical fittings in that building?”

Asserting his readiness to take on any opposition, he declared that “Politeness is not weakness, so you need to go and warn them”.

“I submit myself for your consideration to continue with the good work you’ve supported me to do in the state,” he said.

He derided ‘anyone’ who wishes to take over the government by force of arms as Germany did against Poland, added that ”no single person can determine who governs the state”.

Nigeria’s former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has reacted to her acquittal by a London court after bribery charges brought against her were dismissed.

The Southwark Crown Court in London, United Kingdom, on Wednesday acquitted the former minister of all charges, including five counts of accepting bribes and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.

Reacting to the judgment, Alison-Madueke expressed relief and said she and her family had endured years of emotional distress over the case.

Speaking to News Central, she said she has remained in the United Kingdom since the legal proceedings began 11 years ago.

She said: “I’m just thankful to God, it’s been arduous, almost 11 years. It’s been traumatic not just for me but for my family, friends, my 93-year-old mother in Port Harcourt and for my son.

“It has been a hard journey, but I tell you this, God will always do as He will. God will be God and God is not a man that He should lie; when He promises you something, He will see it through.

“For almost 11 years I have been here. I did my job to the best of my ability.”

I Never Saw Report that Led to Natasha’s Suspension, Says Ireti Kingibe

The lawmaker representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), at the Senate, Ireti Kingibe, says she did not see any report that led to the suspension of Kogi Central Senator, Natasha  Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Kingibe made this disclosure on Wednesday when she featured in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’.

She said she was at a retreat with Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, when she heard about the report.

“I never saw the report that led to Natasha’s suspension. I was at a retreat. I had earlier stated that I was there with three or four other senators who are members of the committee.

“We attended the Committee on Petitions and Public Complaints, signed the attendance register, and I later left for the tax reform retreat, which I considered more important at the time.

“It affects my constituents much more than disciplining a senator, and I figured that the other people who were not part of that committee would take care of it.

“I even complained to other Senators, specifically to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. I complained to him very bitterly that I had not seen that report. I didn’t see it then. I have not seen it till now,” she said.

UK Court Clears Ex-Petroleum Minister Alison-Madueke of All Corruption Charges

Former Nigerian oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke was on Wednesday found not guilty by a London jury of six bribery charges, after ‌a rare corruption trial of a high-profile former energy official.
Alison-Madueke, minister for petroleum resources between 2010 and 2015 under then-president Goodluck Jonathan, stood trial charged with five counts of accepting bribes and a charge of conspiracy to commit bribery, which she denied.
Prosecutors alleged Alison-Madueke, 65, was given “a life of luxury” in London from oil and gas industry figures seeking lucrative contracts in Nigeria, which has long grappled with mismanagement and corruption.
But the former minister, who was also briefly president of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, said she never took any bribes and had no real influence over the awarding of lucrative government contracts.
After a trial at London’s Southwark ‌Crown Court, Alison-Madueke was acquitted by a jury of all six charges she faced after more than 46 hours of deliberation.
The not guilty verdicts are a major blow to British authorities, which began their investigation into corruption allegations against Alison-Madueke more than a decade ago.
Alison-Madueke stood trial alongside oil industry executive Olatimbo Ayinde, 54, who was charged with one count of bribery relating to Alison-Madueke and a separate count of bribery of a foreign public official.
Alison-Madueke’s brother Doye Agama, 69, was charged with conspiracy to commit bribery with his sister relating to payments made to Agama’s church.
Both Ayinde and Agama denied the charges against them and were also acquitted by the jury.
