Anisulowo Rates Ashiru High As Ogun East Consultation Train Goes West

Published

Front line Yewa politician, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo has lauded the unprecedented landmark achievements of Otunba Bimbo Ashiru in the present administration in Ogun State, describing him as a worthy gubernatorial material capable of moving the state forward.

Senator Anisulowo stated this as the consultation team of Ogun East Senatorial zone led by its Chairman, Pa Folorusho Elias, arrived Ogun West to sensitise stakeholders in the district of his political aspiration.

According to Anisulowo, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru is undoubtedly the best hand in Gov. Amosun’s cabinet going by his exemplary track record and proficiency.

The meeting, held at the Otegbeye Pavillion in Ilaro, had in attendance APC leaders from Ogun East as well as their counterparts in Ogun West Senatorial District including former Special Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Gbolade Osinowo; Pa Elias Folorunso, Hon. Yemi Adefulu, Chief Bisi Rodipe, Mr. Lawal Idris, Chief Jare Dada, Elder Olatunji, and Alhaji Rafiu Sonuga,

In the words of the former Special Adviser, Dr. Osinowo, the motive behind the visit was to seek the support of Ogun West leaders for the consensus candidate of Ijebu/Remo, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru for the governorship race in 2019.

According to Osinowo, the people of Ogun East Senatorial District have always been a natural ally of Ogun West in producing the state governor, but sheer providence has determined otherwise.

The political scenarios in 2011 and 2015, he said, were ready testimonies of the Ijebu and Remo’s belief in equity but aborted by the intransigence of the Yewa people to arrive at a consensus candidate.

In response, Senator Kola Bajomo, thanking the team for the visit stressed that Ogun West will always accord each candidate warm reception as demonstrated by the people of Ogun East when Ogun West sought their support.

Also, Alhaji (Dr) Olusesi, while making his remarks, said the voting strength of the people of Ogun East can not be jettisoned as it stands as a veritable weapon that can come to play in  winning election.

Rounding off, the Ogun West Senatorial District Chairman, Alhaji Fadairo in his speech canvassed for peace and harmony between the two Senatorial districts.

Others present at the meeting were Hon. Dada Fagbemi, Hon. Adejobi, Hon Elegbede, Pastor Ade Babayemi, Hon (Mrs) Akale, Alhaji Ajibabi, Alhaji Dele Rufai, Chief Edunjobi, Alhaji Odebiyi, Mrs Victoria Ogunpolu, Alhaji Ajibola Fatai, Hon Michael Adeleke, Mr. Sofolahan Enitan, Aare T. Appeal Court Affirms Ruling Barring VIO from Impounding Vehicles, Fining Motorists

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday upheld the judgment that stopped the Directorate of Road Traffic Services and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) from seizing vehicles or imposing fines on motorists.

In a unanimous decision by a three-member panel, the appellate court found no basis to set aside the Federal High Court’s ruling of October 16, 2024, which restrained the VIO from harassing motorists.

The appeal filed by the VIO was dismissed for lacking merit. Justice Oyejoju Oyewumi delivered in the lead judgment.

The high court had earlier ruled, in a judgment by Justice Nkeonye Maha, that no law authorizes the VIO to stop motorists, impound vehicles, or impose penalties for alleged traffic offences.

The case arose from a fundamental rights suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1695/2023) filed by lawyer Abubakar Marshal.

Marshal informed the court that VIO officials stopped him at Jabi in Abuja on December 12, 2023, and seized his vehicle without lawful reason. He asked the court to determine whether their actions violated his rights.

Justice Maha agreed and ordered the VIO and its agents not to impound vehicles or impose fines on motorists, describing the actions as unlawful. She held that only a court can impose fines or sanctions.

She ruled that the VIO’s conduct breached the applicant’s constitutional right to property under Section 42 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 14 of the African Charter. She further held that the VIO has no legal authority to seize vehicles or penalize motorists, as doing so infringes on rights to fair hearing, movement and presumption of innocence.

Although Marshal, represented by Femi Falana, SAN, requested ₦500 million in damages and a public apology, the court awarded ₦2.5 million.

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services, its Director, its Abuja Area Commander at the time (identified as Mr. Leo), team leader Solomon Onoja, and the FCT Minister were listed as respondents.

They appealed the decision, but the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal.
