Lagos Govt Condemns ‘Gangs of Lagos’, Says Movie Unprofessional, Misleading

The Jade Osiberu film follows the lives of three friends who grow up in a crime-ridden Isale Eko in Lagos and are drawn into gang life.

In a statement on Wednesday, April 12, the state’s Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, condemned the film for misrepresenting the culture of the state.

She further rebuked the producers for portraying the revered Eyo masquerade as a gun-wielding villain.

We are of the opinion that the production of the film ‘Gangs of Lagos’ is very unprofessional and misleading while its content is derogatory of our culture, with the intention to desecrate the revered heritage of the people of Lagos.

“It is an unjust profiling of a people and culture as being barbaric and nefarious. It depicts a gang of murderers rampaging across the state.

The government released the statement hours after the Isale Eko Descendants’ Union (IDU) similarly expressed discontent with the portrayal of the Eyo masquerade. The masquerade performs during festivals and other important events and is believed to represent the spirits of the ancestors.

The IDU lodged a complaint with the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) demanding the withdrawal of the approval granted to the film. The cultural group also demanded the film be withdrawn from all viewing channels.

“The IDU and other community stakeholders will also be considering legal action for the damage done to the culture, tradition and image of the Isale Eko community and the Eyo masquerade,” the group said.

Lizzy Anjorin Denies Stealing in Lagos Market, Fingers Unknown Actress As Mastermind

Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin has denied stealing gold from a market on Lagos Island; an allegation that has sparked controversy.

A video had emerged on social media showing the actress in a sitting position in a store, attempting to ward off a crowd of people recording her amid loud voices.

Anjorin narrated that the incident is about a purported failed transfer of N91,000 that she paid to an accessories seller on Tom Jones in the Idumota area of Lagos.

She alleged that she was set up just like filmmaker Olajide Kareem, alias Seun Egbegbe.

She said that some months ago she had gone to the market to buy accessories for N91,000 and asked her husband to forward the money to a guy who sold the accessories to her only to return to the same market on the day of the incident, to be told that the transfer she made was fraudulent.

She however, accused a famous actress (name withheld) of being the mastermind of the embarrassment. It is a known fact however, that Anjorin and fellow actress, Toyin Abraham are not in good terms.

“At Tom Jones, do they sell gold there? That place is Tom Jones, where we buy wedding materials—all these ‘para para’ (cheap) stones that we want to use for clothes. I do wedding gowns; it depends on the money the bride is paying. So I cannot go to Idumota to go and buy accessories in peace, abi? ‘Shekpeteri’, how come you know the story so quickly if you are not behind it?” She queried.
