Counsel to the embattled Deputy Governor of Imo State, Mr Eze Madumere, Mr. Ken Ehijuele, has said that his client remains the deputy governor of the state in spite of his impeachment carried out by the members of the Imo State House of Assembly.
Mr Ehijuele made the remarks while fielding questions on a live TV programme, Democracy Today, following the court injunction that stopped the swearing in of the ‘new’ deputy governor, Mr. Ekenze, who is the Imo State Head of Civil.
“Eze Madumere remains the deputy governor of Imo State as it stands today. There is a court injunction stopping the purported swearing in of a new deputy governor. A constitution presents the appropriate way of impeaching a public office holder; that process has not been followed here. As a result, there is a reversal to status quo ante,” Ejihuele said.
Recall that the deputy governor and his boss, Owelle Rochas Okorocha have fallen out of favour following the former’s intention the contest the governorship seat in 2019.
Okorocha, it has been reported, prefers his son-in-law, who is presently his chief of staff to replace him. The clash of political interest has therefore, triggered a cold war between the one time best of friends, culminating in the impeachment of the deputy governor.
Madumere is the second deputy governor to be impeached under Okorocha in a space of seven years.
