The former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, has debunked speculations that the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kalu, is being held by the Nigerian military.
Kalu, while fielding a question during a interview with Punch correspondent disclosed that Nnamdi Kanu has fled to London through Malaysia.
He confirmed that a relation of Kalu confided in him with the information.
Hear him: “Kanu was not taken away by the military. Kanu went to Malaysia from where he travelled to the United Kingdom. Nnamdi Kanu is in London right now as we speak. He was not arrested by anybody. He left the country on his own. One of his relations has spoken to me and explained everything because I wanted to see him and talk to him wherever he was and see how I could meet some Federal Government officials on his issue.
“I also wanted to see ways of talking to the President about him, and find common ground but his family told me that he has left the country, unless they are lying to me. I believe, whether he had left the country or not, he is not with the military because I asked the Commander of the 14 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. A.K Ibrahim, who is a very fine and good soldier, well educated and dedicated, and he told me that they don’t know his whereabouts and I am sure, the Department of State Services have the same information.
“I also visited the commissioner of police and he said he didn’t know his whereabouts and that they are also looking for him.”
However, reacting to Kalu’s declaration, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, head of the legal team for Nnamdi Kanu, on Sunday, described Orji Uzor Kalu, as a drowning man desperately in search of relevance from the Federal Government and relief from prosecution on corruption charges for his comments.
Reacting through its spokesman, Emma Powerful, IPOB said Kalu was merely engaged in desperate efforts to extricate himself from his ongoing corruption trial.
“His (Kalu’s) spurious claim that the overall leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has made his way to London via Malaysia, is a confirmation that he would do or say anything to escape his ongoing corruption scandal.
“Worse still, he might be a hapless victim of a well orchestrated blackmail by his Hausa/Fulani Islamic masters or on hallucinogenic drugs,” Powerful said in a statement which was made available to Punch.
The pro-Biafran group accused Kalu and his likes of selling the collective interest of the Igbo, “and by extension, that of Biafra”.
“It didn’t start today but their era is coming to an end,” the group added.
IPOB described Igbo leaders, who were opposed to the agitation for Biafra, as Hausa/Fulani errand boys.
Declaring that Kalu’s claims were false, the IPOB spokesman said, “Both the United Kingdom and Malaysia are civilised countries and not as corrupt as Nigeria, where there is no accurate record of migration in and out of the country.
‘‘What Orji Uzor Kalu is saying in essence is that the United Kingdom government officials are lying when they rightfully demanded the whereabouts of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu has however, remains a mystery. He was last seen and heard from when the Federal Government sponsored ‘Operation Python Dance’ started in the South East.
