The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, has said that the clamour for state police from various quarters is unnecessary.

Mr. Owoseni made the assertion while speaking today at the Lagos State House of Assembly Special Parliamentary Session in commemoration of the First Anniversary of the 8th Assembly and the 23rd Year of June 12 Struggle with theme: Lagos State Status in a True Federation and State Police.

He said: “We don’t need state Police as being canvassed by many people, rather what we need is the implementation of various policies already instituted for effective policing.”

He added that the practice of those days where citizens, especially professionals, walk into the police station and made good suggestions to the Police should be encouraged and returned, stressing that while Lagos may have the capacity to fund a state police, other low income earning states may not.

In his response, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Obasa Mudashiru, asked if the inability of other states to fund state police should prevent Lagos State from going ahead with its own intention. He added that because of the crime rate in the state, police is absolutely necessary.
