Respite came the way of residents of Owutu community along Iba/LASU expressway when heavy Police presence arrived in the area this morning.
The residents erupted in a shout of joy as Police Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) accompanied by heavily armed policemen, dispatched to the community, entered through the Ewedogbon bus stop. The Police, according to eye witness used both drones and helicopters to track the movements of the gunmen.
Residents, who spoke to the Boss, said that in the couple of months, gunmen had been terrorizing the community, killing and maiming at will, adding that the situation has led to the total evacuation of people from the area.
“For sometime now, some people have been coming through the water to kill people in this community, and disappearing through the same route. They always come in the night, killing whoever is their target, and disappearing without being notice,” the resident, who craved anonymity said.
Other respondents said that the situation had been dicey, stressing that the gunmen are angry with the community for reporting them to the government as being responsible for oil bunkering in the area.
In his response, an official of the taskforce said the Police will remain in the area ‘until an element of sanity is achieved’. He added that the mandate was given by the Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who visited the area recently following cries from members of the community.
