After years of alleged atrocities, and despite seeming reforms by the Police authorities, Nigerians have become fed up with the dreaded operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS)
What could be regarded as the last straw that has caused the recent furore was the story making the rounds of SARS officers alleged extra-judicial killings this weekend of a 4 year-old who was reportedly shot on the head as well as the case of the young man who was allegedly chased for driving a Toyota Avensis and shot dead.
Even Singer Simi said guns were pointed at her and her friends for merely laughing. There were also stories of Youths claiming they had been harassed by SARS operatives.
The #EndSARS campaign started yesterday but has gathered momentum with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Police authorities also weighing in.
Atiku on Twitter called for immediate action by the Police authorities and thanked the youths for their outcry. The Police have now launched an investigation and a campaign with phone numbers for atrocities to be reported.
