Nigerians Abroad: Iheanacho leads power rankings

On this week’s edition of the Nigerian players abroad round-up, we take a look at how Nigerian players abroad fared for their respective clubs over the weekend.

Oghenekaro Etebo scored his first goal for Feirense in the Portuguese Segunda division as they beat Academico Viseu 5-0.

In the Premier League, Kelechi Iheanacho netted a brace, his 12th and 13th of the season in all competitions for Manchester City, but they weren’t enough as they went down 4-2 to Southampton in the Premier League. The 19-year old lasted the entire duration of the game.

Alex Iwobi continued to star for Arsenal and he was on from the start again in the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday. He was however replaced after 56 minutes by match-winner, Danny Welbeck.

The duo of Emmanuel Emenike and Victor Moses were on the winning side as West Ham beat West Brom 3-0, but none of them started the game. Emenike was a 66th minute replacement for Diafra Sakho, whileMoses replaced Dimitri Payet on 81 minutes.

In Serie A, Ogenyi Onazi played all 90 minutes for Lazio as they defeated Inter Milan 2-0. Though he didn’t find the back of the net, the Super Eagles midfielder was in inspired form for the capital club at the Stadio Olimpico.

Jerry Mbakogu led the line for Carpi at the Juventus Stadium but fired blanks as they were beaten 2-0 by the newly crowned champions. The loss means Carpi have sunk deeper into relegation waters as Serie A hits home stretch.

Torino were 5-1 winners over Udinese but as expected, Joel Obi, who got injured while warming up last week, was expectedly missing.

Elsewhere, Anthony Ujah will be in action on Monday when Werder Bremen take on Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, but Leon Balogun was not listed for Mainz in their goalless draw with Hamburg.

In Scotland, Efe Ambrose will have to wait another week before he is confirmed Scottish champion, but his club Celtic were in fine form when they beat Hearts 3-1 in the Premiership. Juwon Oshaniwa played all 90 minutes for Hearts, while Abiola Dauda came off the bench to score what proved to be only a consolation.

New Super Eagles invitee Gbenga Arokoyo played all through in the heart of the Gazientepspor defence but couldn’t do much as they were hammered 3-0 by Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig. His compatriot,John Chibuike entered the fray in the 60th minute but couldn’t do anything to alter the outcome of the match.

Also in Turkey, Godfrey Oboabona was in action all through as Rizespor defeated Mersin 2-0. Kenneth Omeruo was missing in Kasimpasa’s 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Galatasaray.
