Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Edoror, has just been impeached alongside his deputy, Mr. Festus Ebea. The duo was accused of highhandedness and incompetence.
The Edo parliament is a 24 member affair, and the speaker and his deputy were impeached by 15 legislators. They were elected over a year ago following an upheaval in the state’s legislature.
A new speaker, Mrs. Elizabeth Ative, has been elected in Edoror’s stead. She is the only female member of the House. Upon taking up the mace, she immediately announced the suspension of the sacked speaker and his deputy from the House.
Meanwhile, sporadic gunshots rented the air in the aftermath of the impeachment at the Assembly Complex in Benin City on Tuesday.
Available information has it that it took the intervention of policemen to restore normalcy at the Assembly.
