Five yet-to-be identified gunmen on Monday morning shot at the palace of Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso I, at Popoyemoja, Ibadan.
The gunmen were said to have come in a white Sienna Toyota space bus with open roof. One of the gunmen was said to have released volleys of gunshots into the the air, while others reportedly shot through windows of the vehicle.
Those who saw the gunmen said they wore black clothes and tied red clothes around their heads and they used pump action rifles and A-K47 rifles. They reportedly cane from Idi-Arere axis and headed towards Oke-Ado. In less than five minutes of the incident, men of a special security outfit of the state, Operation Burst, arrived the Popoyemoja Street and were presently combing the street and its environs at press time.
It was at a time when Olubadan was about to commence the installation of four new Baales (village heads) in his palace. Already in the palace before the sporadic gunshots were the Osi Olubadan and former governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, and Baamofin of Ibadanland, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin.
Former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Sharafadeen Alli, who is the current Asaaju Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland, had a close shave with death. His black sports utility vehicle was shot at and the bullet hole was conspicuous on the car.
Asiwaju Babatunde Yusuff, and Adedokun Ayobami, who were with Alli in the vehicle at the time of the attack said the vehicle was already less than 15 metres to the gate of the palace. According to Yusuff, Alli escaped death because he did not sit at the owner’s corner, saying he chose to sit beside the driver on the front seat.
People around the palace ran helter skelter and traders on both sides of the Popoyemoja Street hurriedly closed their shops and those that have houses by the roadside also locked their doors for safety. But no casualty was recorded as at the time of filing this report.
