The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that local governments in Edo State are autonomous, as a result, are responsible for the payment of their staff salaries.
He made the assertion during the ongoing governorship debate among candidates of four major political parties contesting the September 10 election in Edo State.
This was as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Ize-Iyamu raised the issue of local government staffers who are owed for over a year.
Mr. Obaseki maintained that the local governments are totally ‘autonomous and independent’ and as a result, are to blame for the inability to pay the staff of the local governments.
However, the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr. Osaro Onaiwu, was quick to disagree with Obaseki, saying there is no where in the country where the local governments are free of the state governments, Edo State inclusive.
