A group, under the aegis of Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), has held its first annual conference with the theme: Sustaining Growth Through Diversification of the Economy.
The event which was held at the Renaissance Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, drew the cream of professional online publishers, members of the public and private sectors, the Army, Federal Road Safety Corps and members of the general public.
Kick starting the event was a recitation of the National Anthem, which was followed by an opening prayer before the guests as well as the event were introduced.
The President of the Guild, Mr. Dotun Oladipo of the Eagle online, welcomed the guests with an inspiring speech, chronicling the origin of the Guild as well as initialising the contents of the day’s event.
Oladipo’s speech was followed by Prof. Akin Onigbinde’s speech, who was the Chairman of the event.
Speaker after speaker, the special guests of honour revealed the need and benefits derivable if the nation will diversify, stressing that that will be the only remedy to coming out of recession.
In his presentation, the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, held the gathering spellbound with analytical evidence as to why the country relapsed into recession, and how it can convenient come out of it. He noted that there were basic basic measures that that must be put in place before the country could come out of recession.
According to him: “There are three basic measures that can get the country out recession, and they are: aggressive savings, diversified economy towards manufacturing and investment into developmental education.”
Mr. Peter compared the Nigeria of 1980 when diversified economy was bringing in about 30% of Nigeria’s revenue as against the present when the figured, according to him is practically unknown ranging from ‘10% today and 5% tomorrow’.
In his address, Mr. Bayo Onaguga of the News Agency of Nigeria, admonished online publishers about doing the right thing in terms of readable content while stressing the need to subscribe to NAN for breaking news item. He frowned at the situation where non-news online platforms are getting the attention on Alexa while news makers are relegated.
The Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, who was represented by the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Major General Peter John Duake, spoke on Boko Haram Insurgency in the Face of the Country’s Economic Reality, went memory lane, itemising the origin of the scourge as well as other security challenges of the country.
The speech delivery event also witnessed the presentations of the Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corp, Mr. Boboye Owoyemi, who was represented by represented by Sector Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sheu Zaki; the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, represented by the Durector Public Affairs, Mr. Osita Nwajah; Mr. Tony Okonedo of the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG), and Mr. Oge Udeagha of Exxon Mobil among a host of others.
Also present at the event was President Mohammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Media Aide, Mr. Femi Adesina.
The event rounded up with the inauguration of the new GOCOP executives. They include:The Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, as President; the Publisher, Real News, Maureen Chigbo, as Deputy President; Publisher, Newsdiaryonline, Danlami Nmodu, Secretary General; and Publisher, Metro Watch, Collins Edomaruse, Deputy Secretary General.
Others are the Publisher, World Stage, Segun Adeleye, Financial Secretary; Publisher, The Scroll, Janet Mba-Afolabi, Treasurer; and Publisher, Qed.ng, Olumide Iyanda, Publicity Secretary.
The new executive council replaced the administration of Musikilu Mojeed.
