The one who is popularly and fondly known as Guitar Boy, Sir Victor Uwaifo, has declared that he has invented a new method of playing the guitar.
Uwaifo, who took the music scene by storm with hit songs like ‘Guitar Boy’ confided in TheBoss that he is not spent in music, and he is still working hard to come out with new musical ideas hence the latest invention. He announced that the latest invention is called ‘Flesh and Metal, the sixth finger style’.
“I’ve invented a new method of playing the guitar called Flesh and Metal, the 6th finger style. I can alternate between the normal finger harmer flick style and metal to produce sound that simulates steel pedal Hawaii guitar, electric guitar or box guitar,” the guitar specialist said
He explained further that the method is more than one step above the regular 22 frets of the guitar board.
“The Flesh and Metal’ style goes beyond 22 frets of the guitar board and can match the high octaves of violin or piano.
Also known as Prof, Uwaifo, who is also UNESCO’s living Human Treasure as well as former Edo State Commissioner for Arts and Culture, was born on March 1, 1941. He is not just a musician; he is also a writer, sculptor and musical instrument inventor
Apart from Guitar Boy, Uwaifo, who began playing guitar at the age of 12, is also famous for other songs like ‘Joromi’, ‘Mami Water’ among others.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in appreciation of his talents and contributions to Nigeria arts and culture, honoured him with a National Honors Merit in 1983, which reads in part:
” … whereas you have been nominated and appointed as Member of the Order of the Niger to have and hold and enjoy the privileges of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of the said Order, MON.”
Uwaifo is the first professional musician in Nigeria to receive such an award. He is a Justice of the Peace and has served in many capacities.
Appointed as Justice of Peace (JP) Public Notary and Lay Magistrate, Sir Victor Uwaifo was honored by four Nigerian Presidents:
- He was awarded the National Honors of Nigeria (MON).
- He was invited to the State House by four Presidents and Head of States ofNigeria.
A lecturer at the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Benin, Benin City, Uwaifo is the Chairman of Joromi Organization, a multi-track recording and television studio in Benin City. He also runs and manages an art gallery and the Victor Uwaifo Hall of Fame.
