Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly caused a stir on Wednesday as they held a plenary session right in the middle of the Okesa highway in Ado Ekit to protest the freezing of the bank account of the state governor, Ayodele Fayose, by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC.
Last Tuesday, the anti-graft agencyfreezed two account numbers 1003126654 and 9013074033, belonging to Fayose at the Zenith Bank on the grounds that N1.2 billion of the $2.1 billion arms scandal were traced to them.
The lawmakers, who sat under a canopy displayed placards with different inscriptions such as: “we are ready for arrest”,”harassing Ekiti lawmakers/government won’t give you 2018,” “No matter your media trial and blackmail, on Fayose we stand” and leave Fayose alone” among others.
They asked the federal government to let the governor be, accusing the government at the centre of deliberately orchestrating and manipulating anti-graft and security agencies to intimidate and harass Fayose over his consistent and strident criticism of Buhari’s policies.
Addressing journalists at the scene, Speaker of the state assembly, Kola Oluwawole said; “No amount of intimidation, harassment, arrest will push us to do any dirty job. We have had enough of intimidation.
“They should leave Governor Fayose alone; he was duly elected by the people of Ekiti state. The freezing of his account without following due process is a high level of intimidation and we condemn it.”
