Winners of the just concluded Youth Tourism Connect National Essay Competition, 2017 edition, were recently rewarded for their feat at a well attended ceremony that took place at the Nanet Suites, Abuja.
In a press statement announcing the prizes, the MD/CEO of Desigo Tourism and Convener of the programme, Abigail Olashina Olagbaye, explained that the competition, a project and initiative of Desigo Tourism Development and Facility Management Company, was designed to engage for tourism development the ideas, talents, attention, creativity, innovation, intelligence and energy of the youths across the nation between the ages of 11-18 for the junior category, and between of 18-35 for the senior category.
The successfully conducted project produced Ogbaga Sunday Thomas from Ebonyi State, Temitope Steve Arowosafe from Osun State and Bello Sarafadeen Mayowa from Kwara State who came first second and third respectively, carting away N500, 000, N200, 000 and N100, 000 and other smart devices in that order. This is for the senior category.
In the junior category, Randhy Iko-Abasi Ken-Inyang from Akwa Ibom State took the first prize of N200, 000 and a smart device.
Mrs. Olagbaye said that the winners were given VIP treatment as they were flown to Abuja, and lodged at the Nanet Hotel for four days a camping period after which they were hosted by the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC).
In their keynote addresses at the ceremony, the Director-General of NTDC, Mr. Folorunsho Coker and the President, GOTNI, Mr. Linus Okorie focused on Use of ICTs to Promote Tourism Development and the Inclusion of the Youth and How to Become A Thought Leader in the Tourism Industry and Getting Set for the Global Stage, respectively.
Dignitaries at the event included National President of Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria (FTAN), Chief Abiodun Odusanwo, Deputy Director, Domestic Tourism, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Mrs. Patricia Narai, Vice President, FTAN, FCT, Alhaji Badaki Aliyu.
