Death and More Deaths: End of Road for Davido?

By Eric Elezuo and Adedayo Christiana

All is not well at the moment for Nigeria’s A-list artiste, David Adedeji Adeleke, popularly called Davido, as he is battling to extricate himself from the clutches of a murder case over the death of his friend and associate, Tagbo Umueke. As if that wasn’t enough, two more of his associates, Olugbemiga Abiodun and Amaechi Chime followed suit a few days afterwards. Both died in the basement of their home at the highbrow Banana Estate, Lagos.

The news which has spread like wide fire on all social platforms, and had become the talk of the town is causing quite a heartbreak for the singer who disrespectfully called Ovation publisher ‘my boy’ in one of his tracks.

Preliminary information has it that Tagbo took 40 shots of Tequila on his birthday while in company of some friends including Davido at Shisha Bar in Lekki, Lagos Island, and that eventually led to his death on October 3.

The bar attendant as well as video footages attested the fact, revealing that the deceased showed a clear sign of drunkenness.

But Tagbo’s girlfriend, an actress, Caroline Danjuma, however, has accused Davido of involvement in the deceased death, saying that even if Davido may not have a hand in the death, he sure knows what transpired. According to her, they had a bet-drink over iPhone 8 and two million naira, and this led to his instant suffocation and death eventually, she added.

Davido denied this, claiming he was innocent and that he had left the bar for DNA night club earlier before receiving the death report of Tagbo.

In the unfolding drama berthing on denials concerning Davido’s involvement in the death, the chief security officer of Lagos Island General Hospital alerted the Divisional Police fficer in charge of Lion Building that an unidentified man was brought in an ash colour Camry car, thereby changing the tide of investigation.

On further inquiry, the Police discovered, as narrated by the hospital’s authority that ‘those who brought in the dead body abandoned him at the hospital’. This revelation prompted the Police to swing into action, using CCTV and interrogatory techniques to unravel the fact that ‘those’ in question were actually David’s men. And in the words of the Acting Lagos Commissioner of Lagos, Mr. Imohinmi Edgal, they acted on the ‘instructions of Davido’.

The Police also revealed that it was the international passport found on Tagbo’s body that gave rise to his identification.

The revelations during the cause of investigation, which include the fact that Tagbo was conveyed and abandoned at the hospital on Davido’s instruction by two unidentified men in Davido’s personal escort car also provided CCTV footage which led to the recovery of the escort vehicle at Davido’s residence at Awosika Street Lekki phrase 1.

However, the claim of being arrested as is being portrayed in the public domain was debunked by Davido, saying he was never arrested, but has been questioned by the Police. The ‘If’ crooner has maintained that he knows nothing about the death of his friend, Tagbo, even as Police insist that he has questions to answer as regards the mysterious death.

In a statement released Friday, the singer, through his legal adviser, Norrison Quakers (SAN) said he was never arrested by the Police, rather he made himself available for questioning.

“Our client maintains that he has not in any way lied about what he knows about the unfortunate incident, neither has his statement to the police been incoherent as unfortunately being presented in the media,” the statement read.

The way it looks, the career of the 2017 AFRIMA award winner, who is better known in some quarters as Omo Baba Olowo may be heading for the rocks as many evidence are pointing to his complicity in his friend’s death. While he may get away with killing Tagbo, there’s the likelihood that a question of negligence and denials may hang on his head.

While Davido was battling and continues to battle to save his neck, two more of his friends joined the trail of deaths. These two were his DJ and son of billionaire industrialist and CEO of Heyden Petroleum, Dapo Abiodun, Olugbemiga Abiodun popularly known as Dj Olu and Chime Ameachi were found dead in his car on October 7.

A cross section of Nigerians, especially Lagosians have come to believe that it will take the ‘grace of God’ for Davido to extricate himself from these allegations as the Police are his number one accuser already. Imohinmi’s statement, after preliminary investigations, which has trended online seems to have nailed the prolific singer.

“I think Davido has more to tell the public concerning his friend’s death. Obviously, he may not have had a direct link to his deathj, but the fact he instructed his people to abandon him at the hospital speakes volumes,” said one of his music followers.

Today, the social media: twitter, istagram and facebook are divided with notions from fans and haters alike regarding their thoughts on the way forward of the musician, who is not only battling for freedom from jail but also the music career he has spent the better part of his life to build.
