Imo State lawmakers on Thursday suspended the elected chairmen of the 27 local government areas of the state.
This followed the chairmen’s refusal to appear before the lawmakers during the plenary.
The Directors of Administration and General Services and the Treasurers of the LGAs had appeared at the plenary following invitation extended to them by the lawmakers on April 25 but the LGA chairmen stayed away.
The lawmakers who were infuriated by the council bosses’ action said that the chairmen neither honoured their invitation nor wrote to them to explain why they were absent.
The motion for the immediate suspension of the chairmen was moved by Chika Madumere (Nkwerre)which was unanimously supported by all the lawmakers at the plenary.
The sponsor of the motion accused the chairmen of failing to appear before the legislature to explain how they had been running their LGAs financially.
According to Madumere, the suspended chairmen undermined the legislature by failing to properly honour invitations sent to them a number of times.
Ruling in favour of the motion, the speaker, Acho Ihim, instructed the suspended chairmen to immediately hand over to their deputies.
